STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE EAC COMMISSION ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF WORLD MALARIA DAY WORLD MALARIA DAY
This 25 April 2022, the
Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) joins the rest of
the world in celebrating World Malaria Day, under the theme "Innovating
to reduce the burden of malaria and save lives".
Data released by the
World Health Organization shows that in 2020, more than two-thirds of
deaths were among children under five living in the World Health
Organization (WHO) African Region.
According to the UN, the entire
population living in the 11 Central African countries of about 200
million were considered to be at risk of malaria; this represents 5% of
the world's population at risk in 2019. The region accounted for almost a
quarter of the global burden of disease and mortality in the same year.
This situation has certainly worsened with the occurrence of the COVID
19 pandemic in our sub-region since 6 March 2020.
Faced with this
alarming situation, the ECCAS Commission is committed to assisting all
its eleven (11) Member States to achieve the goal of eliminating malaria
by 2030 as recommended in the "World Health Organisation's Global
Technical Strategy 2016 -2030".
To achieve this goal, the ECCAS
Commission, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO),
the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) and the Alliance of African
Heads of State for Malaria Elimination (ALMA), has just developed the
Regional Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination in Central Africa 2022
-2026.
Once adopted, this plan will allow :
i) support the promotion of political and financial commitment to malaria elimination at the highest level of national and regional decision makers;
ii) strengthen regional coordination and inter and multi-sectoral collaboration to achieve the goal of malaria elimination;
iii) promote by 2026, the surveillance system, monitoring and evaluation, and research to accelerate the process of malaria elimination;
iv) facilitate cross-border collaboration in the coordination and implementation of certain interventions such as Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) distribution campaigns;
v) mobilise resources to support the implementation of the strategic plan, and ensure long-term sustainability for the regional malaria elimination ambitions.
On the occasion of the celebration of the World Malaria Day, the ECCAS Commission solicits the mobilisation of all stakeholders from the public and private sector as well as technical and financial partners to support member states in their efforts to eliminate malaria by 2030.
Ambassador Gilberto Da Piedade VERISSIMO
President of the ECCAS Commission
